If you have a question about vehicle maintenance and repairs, find it here or give us a call at Friendly Ford today.

Q: How often should I change my oil?

A: It depends on the vehicle, but the rule of thumb is every 5,000 to 7,000 miles. You can check your owner’s manual for more information and even set up a service schedule with your technician. At any point, if you check the oil and it appears black and gritty, you should get an oil change.

Q: Do I need synthetic motor oil or is conventional okay?

A: Conventional oil is fine for most vehicles, but synthetic is recommended for high-output cars like tow vehicles and turbocharged engines. You may get better gas mileage and be able to go longer between intervals using synthetic.

Q: What should I do if my car is overheating?

A: The first thing to do is turn your heat on high to let some of the heat out and away from the engine. Pull over in a safe place as soon as you can and turn the engine off, because leaving the engine on while it’s overheating for too long can do serious damage.

Q: What does the check engine light mean?

A: The check engine light can mean a lot of things, from something as small as a bad spark plug to something much worse. Take your vehicle to a parts store where they can run a diagnostic test, and you can decide whether to take it in for repairs from there.

Q: What does a squealing sound from under the hood mean?

A: If you hear squealing when you brake, that may mean your brake pads are worn too thin and you need them replaced. Squealing when you start or turn the car, you may have a worn belt that needs replaced. Inspect the belts or take them to a mechanic to have them inspected ASAP.
